I visited the antiques shop in Gloucester on Westgate Street and gave two pairs of young people £10 each to find something they could sell for a profit.
As in the TV show, the pairs were given an hour to find, negotiate the best price for, and purchase their items. One of the pairs decided to buy multiple items with their £10.
One of the young people involved chose an ornate Japanese-style, letter opener. It was made of brass with bird and plant designs scored or engraved on the blade. It may have had a handle. We think it may be from the 19th century. The ticket price was £7.50 but the person negotiated it down to £5. After searching online at similar items and engraving styles, prices with handles ranged from £50-1200!
Their partner chose a small, circular green onyx trinket box. They chose it because of its vibrant colour. It had a vein of reddish rock running through the pot. They paid £3.50 which was the ticket price but resale value is £7-£20.
Our next visit will be to a charity shop to see what bargains we can find there.
